New patient-centered TB treatment delivery in Tanzania

Tanzania has introduced treatment intake observation at home by a supporter of choice. Research finds that Tanzanian TB patients who receive directly observed therapy at home with a supporter watching treatment intake achieve similar cure rates and higher treatment success than those who receive equivalent treatment at a health facility.

High TB incidence among young children in Cape Town

In a study to estimate the TB burden of children under five in Cape Town, 2.9 percent of children born in 1999 were found to have developed TB before the age of five. This is one of the highest incidence rates in the world. The TB incidence among children is highest in those aged one year. Many have few disease symptoms and are difficult to diagnose. Further study into the diagnosis of TB in children is needed.

Regional TB training center opens in Tbilisi

31 January 2010
On January 30th the Tbilisi Regional Training Center for Tuberculosis in Georgia was officially opened by Sandra Roelofs, wife of Georgian president Saakasjvili and Chair of the Country Coordination Mechanism in Georgia. The regional training center will provide high quality national and international training for staff involved in TB control from Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The impact of Haiti’s earthquake on KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation’s TB program in the Dominican Republic
Netty Kamp of KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation called Dr. Lúis Alberto Rodriguez, currently part of the emergency task force organized by the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Health for emergency relief for victims of the earthquake in Haiti. He spoke of a ticking time bomb: refugees are pouring into the Dominican Republic.
